- V-79-8192-38335: A failure occurred while locking the virtual machine in place for backup/restore operations.
- Final error: 0x200095bf: A failure occurred while locking the virtual machine in place for backup/restore operations.

Cause

The root cause of the problem appears to be related to missing or renamed VMware VDDK file Libcurl.dll in the Backup Exec installation directory. (C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\VMware\8.0\VixDiskLib\bin)

Due to security vulnerability CVE-2024-7264, some vulnerability scanners and/or customers will remove the libcurl.dll library from the following VMware VDDK location:

Backup Exec Windows Media Server: C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\VMware\8.0\VixDiskLib\bin\libcurl.dll

Impact of CVE-2024-7264 on Backup Exec

This library is part of the VMware VDDK and is required in order for Backup Exec to perform backups/restores of VMware virtual machines.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, follow these steps:

Replace the libcurl.dll library back into the above locations.
OR
Run a Repair in the Backup Exec installation.

It may be necessary to add that library location to the exception list for your vulnerability scanner.
