Description

Error Message

Error code 0xe000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status

Cause

Backups were failing due to a checkpoint issue. The checkpoint issue caused the writers to go down, leading to backup failures. The Hyper-V VMMS (Virtual Machine Management Service) was not found.

Resolution

To resolve the Hyper-V backup failure issue, follow these steps:

  1. Check for Windows updates and ensure that the host has recently been rebooted. This can help resolve any underlying issues related to the checkpoint and writer components.

  2. Verify the status of the Providers and Writers by logging into the host and checking for any errors. Follow the steps in this article to check the Providers and Writers status: https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/article.100020300.html If the writers are stable, proceed to the next step.

  3. Enable the shadow copy attributes on the remote server where the backups are being performed. Set the shadow copy storage limit to "No Limit" to ensure sufficient space for the backups. Right click on the drive, Properties, Shadow Copies, settings, "No Limit".

  4. Check the integration services on the virtual machines and ensure they are running properly. If any integration services are not running, restart them.

  5. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft support for further assistance. They can provide guidance on fixing the checkpoint issue and resolving any underlying problems with the Hyper-V environment.
