Error Message

Job Log reports the following errors :

0xe0009744 - At least one directory in the backup set contains items that are not supported by Granular Recovery Technology (GRT).  Granular restores cannot be performed for these items.

OR

0xe000976a - At least one virtual machine volume in the backup set contains a volume format that is not supported by this version of the Windows Operating System and therefore is not supported by Granular Recovery Technology (GRT).  Granular restores cannot be performed for these volumes.

Cause

Full/Incremental/Differential backup of a Hyper-V virtual machine with GRT to disk and then duplicate to Tape storage, Cloud Storage and Cloud-deduplication storage (MSDP-C) with encryption enabled on the secondary copy leads to a condition where restore does not work.

Resolution

The issue is fixed in BE 23 Hotfix 463014 and in BE 22.2 Hotfix 311011.

Download the patch for the applicable version and apply it on Backup Exec (BE) Server. Update the backup exec remote agent on a remote server after the BE server is patched. Rerun the duplicate job (with encryption) of the Hyper-V GRT backup set which still resides on disk storage or take fresh backups/ duplicates and test a GRT restore to confirm the restore is working from the encrypted duplicate set.

Note: Hyper V GRT encrypted duplicate copy backed up with BE 22.0 will restore successfully from any device.

If the issue is seen and the Hotfix is not yet installed below workaround can be applied:

1) Increase the retention on the disk set until the Hotfix is applied.

OR

2) Edit the job and duplicate it to secondary storage without encryption.
