Description

During the configuration of a cloud storage in Backup Exec, the cloud vendor instance is selected from the configure storage -> Cloud storage dropdown menu. Google, Amazon, Azure, Wasabi etc. are present by default in this list. The other S3 compatible vendors can be added with the method mentioned in this article - How to configure S3-Compatible Cloud Storage with V2 or V4 authentication.

When S3 compatible instances are created, they can be configured with or without adding the region information for the Cloud instance. Some storage vendors like SCloud, Iron Mountain do not require region-specific information while configuring its instance. This article shows with an example how this kind of storage can be configured within Backup Exec without specifying the region information.

Note: Refer Backup Exec Hardware Compatibility List (BE 22, Cloud Storage section) to check S3 compatible cloud storage where region level information need not be added during the instance configuration.

Configure generic S3 cloud storage without the default region in Backup Exec :SCloud storage example is covered below:

Backup Exec Generic S3 configurator tool located at BE install path\Generic_S3_Configurator.exe can be used to configure such instances.

The above fields are filled with information as discussed below.

1. The bucket should be created from SCloud console (cloud vendor console). In this example, a bucket of singapore region (SCloud) is used.

2. The Instance name can be of user's choice. The service host/endpoint information is to be checked from S3 vendor website or the documentation.
Note: Different regions may have unique service host names, so ensure to use the service hostname for the region where the bucket is located.

3. Check the cloud vendor documentation to confirm if V2 or V4 authentication is supported. Then choose appropriate provider from the dropdown of Generic S3 Configurator tool which is located in Backup Exec Install Path (compatible-with-s3 or compatible-with-s3-v4).

4. URL Style - use path or refer S3 cloud storage vendor documentation. Hit Enter or Execute Command  to create the Instance.

Note: Do not use Manage region to specify the region in this case as some vendors like SCloud, Iron Mountain do not require to add region while configuring the instance.

5. At this point, the instance is created for BE to consume during cloud storage configuration.

6. Connect to Backup Exec console. Switch to Storage Tab, click on Configure Cloud Storage. The cloud storage name in Backup Exec could be different from the S3 cloud instance name that was configured using the configurator tool. Click Next.

7.  Choose S3 and click Next

8. sg-cloud-instance created with the Backup Exec Generic S3 configurator tool is listed at this point. Select it and click Next.

9. Make sure to add the credentials to access the cloud bucket.
Note: The access key id and secret access key may be specific to the buckets in that region, unlike Azure or AWS whose secret access keys can be used for all buckets across regions.

10. The cloud bucket should be visible. Select it and then finish to initiate the cloud storage configuration.

11. Click Finish and Service restart prompt is seen. Click Yes to restart BE services and complete the configuration process.

12. Cloud Storage is now online and available for Backup and Restore operations.
