Cause

Backup Exec is designed to Back up the One Drive cloud storage using the Microsoft 365 Backup feature. The local folders are synced with One Drive Cloud Storage will fail to backup and is by design.

The Files on Demand feature of One Drive reduces space on local disk by leaving a special NTFS reparse point and shifting the file onto the One Drive Cloud Storage. The One drive Windows Cloud Files Filter Driver is acting on the folder and prevents Backup Exec from backing it up.

Refer Microsoft Support page to learn more about OneDrive Files On-Demand for Windows.

Resolution

1. Backup the files and folder from One Drive using Microsoft 365 Feature of Backup Exec. (Microsoft 365 Business accounts)

Backing up Microsoft 365 using Backup Exec

2. An Agent based Backup will fail with Access Denied error.  The folder can be excluded to ensure the Backup Job completes successfully for the other selections or resources that are included in the job.

Edit the Backup Job Selections and uncheck/Exclude the OneDrive folder path from the Backup.

Example: (deselect C:\Users\\OneDrive, X:\data\OneDrive, \\OneDrive)

OR

Disable Files on Demand Feature from within the One Drive settings, which moves the files back to local storage and removes the reparse point. This enables Backup Exec to backup these files and folders. If an error is still seen with the Files on Demand disabled, it may be possible that the reparse tags on the local One Drive folder still exist.

Run the below commands from command prompt to check if the folder has reparse tags – Information about  fsutil reparsepoint

fsutil reparsepoint query "C:\Users\\OneDrive"
fsutil reparsepoint query "X:\data\OneDrive"

FSUTIL returns the Reparse Tag Value means the folder is still a reparse point and a Backup of that folder will fail.

FSUTIL returns Error:  The file or directory is not a reparse point., the folder or files are no longer a reparse point and the Backup should complete successfully.

Microsoft Support can be contacted to ensure reparse points are removed by disabling the "Files on Demand" feature.
