Cause

On the EMC Unity device, frequent scheduled snapshot of the NDMP volumes can be scheduled frequently.

These types of snapshots create a new volume that is linked to the original volume. The snapshot retains a complete copy of the original data, and any changes made to the original data are written to the new snapshot volume.  Every time a snapshot is created a new volume ends up being discovered and can be protected by Backup Exec.

The number of snapshots present and discovered by Backup Exec adds a large number of entries in the Backup Exec database and causes the console issue.

Issue/Introduction

The Backup Exec console becomes unresponsive over time if an EMC Unity NDMP device is added to Backup Exec.
The Backup Exec console may hang or become unresponsive. The console will eventually report a status of Loading Data as shown in Figure 1 after an extended period. The console will eventually open after an extended period of time. Once the console is open, any further operations (Job creation or movement between tabs) the Backup Exec console may take a further amount of extended time to complete and appear to hang. A query error may appear in the lower left of the Backup Exec console as shown in Figure 2.
