Cause

In the case of some Linux VM machines like SLES, Debian servers, when we add these machines using the Add Server option for protecting them with Backup Exec, we do not have enough information to distinguish them as virtual machines, so the machines initially get added with Windows physical machine icon. When we perform a backup of these machines, a new resource container is created with hostname for the same machine, but there is no impact on backup and restore functionality. Both backups and restores work well without issues.

Resolution

Workaround:

Add such Linux machines with hostnames and ensure that the Linux machines IP address entries are added in the /etc/hosts file.

Issue/Introduction

  • Debian/SLES/SLES virtual machine gets added with Windows physical machine icon when added with IP address.
  • If we add the Debian machine with hostname the machine gets added in Backup Exec console with the correct normal blue Linux virtual machine icon.
  • When we add the machine for the very first time, the machine gets added with Windows physical machine icon and once we run a backup job there is another resource container that gets added for the same machine with a Linux physical machine icon.
  • If we remove both these resource containers and try to add them again, it gets added only with the Windows physical machine icon.
