Error Message


The following error message is seen:

C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\BkupLnch.exe
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

 


Any attempt to repair or remove Backup Exec results in the following error message:
The install failed with an unexpected error: Arithmetic operation resulted in a overflow.

 

 

Cause

1. Patch installation is being executed or applied when not logged on as the Backup Exec Service Account.

2. Backup Exec Lockdown Server service is not started and is starting with the Backup Exec Service account user and not LocalSystem Account.

3. Virtfile filter driver version is not up to date.


 

Resolution

1. This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 21.2 R2 or higher versions.

2. By Default, Backup Exec Lockdown Server service runs under LocalSystem account. Change the Logon account used for Backup Exec Lockdown Server service from the User Account  to LocalSystem Account and start the services.

Once the Backup Exec Lockdown server service is started all the dependent Backup Exec services can be started/

3. Ensure that the Virtfile.sys  filter driver present in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\Virtfile.sys on the Backup Exec server matches the Virtfile.sys version present in C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\VirtFile.
If the version of Virtfile.sys is not same or if the Virtfile driver is missing, please contact Veritas Technote support.

 


 

 

Issue/Introduction

After an upgrade to Backup Exec 21.2; unable to open the Backup Exec console. This issue has been observed only when patching Backup Exec 21.x to Backup Exec 21.2 using the patch .exe executable.
