In the Windows System Event log at the time of the backup failure the following Event ID 153 message will also be found :

The IO operation at logical block address 0x74704c0e for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\00000036) was retried.

 

Cause

The error essentially means that the IRP (IO Request Packet)  has timed out while the IO System waited for it to complete. This is known to happen for a variety of reasons.

Resolution

Where this occurred on HP Z4 G4 workstations running Windows 10 Pro 1809, the customer contacted HP support, obtained and installed the latest drivers for the machine, and the problem disappeared (no more Event ID 153 errors and subsequent backups successful)

Alternative approaches to fix this problem could also include replacing the SATA or power supply cable and updating an outdated BIOS version.
