Description

Solution 1 :

To prevent this issue, use the 'Enable Instant GRT' setting for the backup job. This will create an abbreviated GRT restore selection view for the backup job. However with 'Instant GRT', the disk media will need to be present in order to drill down into the GRT restore selections.

Solution 2:

To recover granular data from a backup in this situation, perform the following:

  1. With the removable disk media in the disk storage unit, locate the storage in the Storage tab within Backup Exec and go to Details --> Backup Sets.

Note: Follow Tech article How to enable or display Hidden backup to disk or Disk Storage (BKF, IMG, OST) media in Backup Exec. in order to display disk media.

  2. Locate the backup set for the item for which granular selections are missing, highlight it, and go to properties.

  3. In the properties view, make a note of the Catalog File Name. It will be a .xml file.

  4. Go to the Backup Exec settings | Configuration and Settings | Backup Exec Services and select to Stop all services.

  5. Follow steps mentioned in Tech article : Temporarily disable Data Lifecycle Management in Backup Exec to prevent automatic deletion of expired backup sets to temporarily disable DLM.

  6. In Windows Explorer, locate the Backup Exec catalogs folder, typically at C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalogs\SERVERNAME.

  7. Locate the filename noted in 'step c)' above. There should be a .xml file and a .fh file. Move both the files and place them on the desktop or some other temp folder out of the Catalogs folder.

  8. In the Backup Exec services manager, select to Start all services.

  9. In the Storage view, right click on the disk media containing the backup and select to catalog. Once catalog job is complete, all restore selections should be present.

  10. Follow steps mentioned in Tech article : Temporarily disable Data Lifecycle Management in Backup Exec to prevent automatic deletion of expired backup sets to enable DLM.

Solution 3:

Perform a full redirected restore at the database level of the backup set. While the granular items will be missing from restore selections in this scenario, the top level restore selections are visible. A full database (Exchange, Sharepoint, Active Directory) or Virtual Machine (VMWare, Hyper-V) redirected restore may be performed in order to extract granular items.

Cause

Removable disk storage is ejected/removed before the scheduled full GRT catalog operation has been run.

In this scenario, this scheduled full GRT catalog job will fail because the disk media used for the backup is no longer present.

Issue/Introduction

In creating a restore job of granular items (GRT), the items are missing from the restore selections view. This issue occurs if the backup job setting for Instant GRT is set to 'Schedule a full catalog operation as a separate job after the backup finishes' or 'Run a full catalog operation as a separate job immediately after the backup job finishes' and that full catalog job fails or is missed.
