Description

Error Message (during restore attempts)

Either

'None' reported in the restore selections pane after attempting to expand the incremental set

OR the restore job fails with

0xe000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.

Cause

The reclaim occurs only if a duplicate of the full backup exists, however as the duplicate is on tape and GRT, from an on-disk incremental set, requires all parts of the chain back to and including the full to be online and mountable, this reclaim of the full causes the failure of the GRT restores.

Resolution

Workarounds:

Increase the retention times of the on-disk backup sets so that they cover at least the time for a complete new last recovery chain to exist

If the full has already been reclaimed, duplicate the full back from tape to disk (or deduplication) storage in order to do the GRT restore from the on-disk incremental sets

Issue/Introduction

When using Backup Exec, if a Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup configuration is implemented where full and incremental sets are written to on-disk or deduplication storage, and the full set is also duplicated to tape, then the full backup set on disk can be reclaimed (deleted) even if the following, associated incremental backup sets form part of the last recovery chain. If after this reclaim of the full occurs an attempt is made to perform a GRT restore of data from within one of the later incremental sets, the result will be no selections shown for Instant GRT sets OR for fully cataloged GRT sets, the restore job can be created but, if run, will fail, possibly with a crash of the remote agent process. Notes: - This early reclaim of the full not only needs a duplicate set to exist, but also requires that the sets have actually expired - Testing was performed with a GRT enabled backup of a virtual machine running in VMware, other GRT configurations may show different symptoms.
