Description

It is possible to create a bootable Veritas Recovery Disk onto a USB thumb drive without destroying the contents on the thumb drive. This recovery USB drive has the same functionality of the SRD on CD\DVD, including creating cold backups and restoring image files created with BESR 8.x, 2010.x and SSR 2011.x and above.

To perform this operation:

1. Plug in the USB thumb drive and insert the Veritas System Recovery (SRD) CD (or have access to an .ISO image of the SRD). It is recommended to use an FAT32 file formatted drive.
   Note: Veritas System Recovery Disk on USB is not supported for the following disks or drives:
   > FAT (FAT16) and exFAT formatted drives.
   > Dynamic disk.
   > Hidden volumes (no drive letter is assigned to the USB volume).
   > USB is write-protected.
   > USB is protected using any encryption software (such as, BitLocker, TrueCrypt, SEP) at the disk or the volume level.
   > USB drives that are on extended partitions.
   > USB disk is formatted to GPT layout.
   > U3 USB devices.
2. Launch the Veritas System Recovery Console.
3. From the menu bar, select Tasks, then Create New Recovery Disk...
   
   
4. Click Next.
   
   
5.  The Recovery Disk option in this example is Typical.
   
   
6.  Choose the Destination for the Recovery ISO file to be created. It can be created on both the USB and a destination on the local drive.
   
   
7.  Enable licensed features screen
   
8. Storage and Network Drivers can be added or removed.
   
   
9.  Startup Options
   
   
10. Network Options
    
    
11. Set up LightsOut Restore if needed
    
    
12. Review the Summary screen and Click Finish.

The USB drive can now be used to recover the computer.  It is recommended that you test the drive by booting from it.  To boot to a USB device, ensure that the system BIOS is set up to boot to USB devices and that the system can indeed boot to USB. Refer to your system documentation for this information.

Note: You cannot perform a delayed restore using a Veritas System Recovery Disk on USB drive if the recovery point(s) are stored on a network location.
