Log Collection for Troubleshooting Backup Exec Deduplication Options - Detailed Description

Solution

When troubleshooting issues with Backup Exec deduplication options, Backup Exec support technicians may request additional logs to diagnose the problem. This document describes the procedure for configuring Backup Exec to collect these logs.

. There are several scenarios for collecting logs. Logs must be collected from different locations depending on how the deduplication option is used. Skip to the scenario most similar to your environment.

Scenario:
  • Create duplicate removal folder
  • Use duplicate removal folder
  • Deduplication using GRT
  • Use of Remote Agent with direct access configured
Duplicate removal folder creation or folder search issues (offline/unsearched duplicate removal folders).

In the Backup Exec user interface, navigate to: Tools > Support Utilities > Run Debug Monitor for Active Debugging.

On the Debug Monitor screen, select the checkboxes for "Task Engine, RAWS, Agent Browser", "Backup Exec Server", "Devices and Media", "Third-party Debug Output", and "Capture to File".

Important: Once troubleshooting is complete, you must restore the file to its original state to prevent this log from taking up too much disk space.

Creates a duplicate removal folder.

If the duplicate removal folder creation issue occurs immediately, skip the next step.

Restart the service to complete the creation of the duplicate removal folder.

Use duplicate removal folder:

Perform the diagnostic configuration steps up to the step of creating the deduplication folder in the above deduplication folder creation issue (excluding the pd.conf file modification part). Then...

Stop the Backup Exec service using the Tools/Backup Exec Service dialog box in the Backup Exec user interface.

Performs the tasks being analyzed. These settings generate very large log files. For backup tasks, ensure that you back up using a backup set that is as small as possible while still allowing the problem to be reproduced.

Troubleshooting GRT Backup Issues (When GRT Backups Fail but Non-GRT Backups Work)

In the Backup Exec user interface, navigate to the [Tools]/[Support Utilities]/[Run Debug Monitor for Active Debugging] menu option. Select [Task Engine, RAWS, Agent Browser], [Backup Exec Server], [Devices and Media], and [Capture to File]. Go to [Tools] -> [Settings] -> [Devices and Media]. Turn off detailed logging.

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows Registry Editor may cause the operating system to malfunction. Therefore, modifying the Windows Registry should be performed with extreme caution by a professional proficient in using the Registry Editor application. It is recommended to back up the Registry and the entire workstation before making any changes.

Open the Registry Editor using [Start]-[Run]-[Regedit].
Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\PureDisk\PDVFS key.

Right-click the PDVFS key, select Create New DWord Value, and name it DebugLevel.
Right-click the new DebugLevel value. Select the [Modify] option and set the value to 3.
To capture VMware stream handler declarations, you must set the DebugLevel value to 6 or 7. Since this generates very large logs, please use Level 3 only if instructed by technical support.

Important: Once troubleshooting is complete, delete this key to prevent PDVFS log files from taking up too much disk space.

Remote Agent Deduplication (RAD) Issue:

When troubleshooting RAD issues, you must collect diagnostic files from both the media server and the remote system. Follow the procedure for collecting files from the media server as described in the deduplication folder usage issue above. Then, perform the same steps as configuring the diagnostic files on the remote server.
Since the remote server does not have a user interface, you must run the debug monitor execution utility separately   for active debugging . Locate the program directory of the Backup Exec server on the remote server (default location is C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\RAWS). Double-click sgmon.exe to run the debugging monitor for active debugging, and double-click vxgather.exe to run the Gather Utility.

Performs the tasks being analyzed. These settings generate very large log files. For backup tasks, ensure that you back up using a backup set that is as small as possible while still allowing the problem to be reproduced.

Files to send to Backup Exec technical support for analysis

In the Backup Exec user interface, navigate to [Tools]/[Support Utilities]/[Run Gather Utility...]. Select the Backup Exec Database LogsBackup Exec Service Crash Logs , and Backup Exec PDDE and OST Logs options. Collect the files and send the resulting files to technical support. If you are trying to troubleshoot RADA issues, do not forget to collect files from the remote server as well. Since files larger than 10MB cannot be sent to Backup Exec via email, they must be uploaded to the Backup Exec technical support FTP site.

Important: Do not forget to turn off all additional logging. Leaving it enabled will slow down the system and fill up the disk quickly.
