Tape in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL is archived if importing other media during being erased or during being imported

Cause

  • If a slot already contains a media when importing other media, Backup Exec first exports the existing media, then imports other media.
  • The existing media in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL is archived because of being exported.

 

Resolution

Wait for the first operation to complete, to avoid that a media is archived unexpectedly in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL.

Issue/Introduction

A tape media in AWS(Amazon Web Services) Storage Gateway–VTL can be archived from Virtual Tape Library to Virtual Tape Shelf storage when exporting the media: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/latest/tgw/backup-BackupExec.html#BE-archive-tapes

Also, a media in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL is archived if importing other media while the media is erased or is imported as follows.

Example 1: 1) On the Storage tab, right-click Slots in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL, click Details.

2) Right-click the slot that contains the media that you want to erase.

3) Click Erase > Erase media now.

4) Click Yes when you are prompted to erase the media.

5) Just after the slot is empty for the erasing, right-click the slot, click Import > Import media now. After step 5), the media that you want to erase is exported and then other media is imported.
Also, the media that you want to erase is archived because of it being exported.
Example 2: 1) On the Storage tab, right-click Slots in AWS Storage Gateway–VTL, click Details.

2) Right-click an empty slot, click Import > Import media now.

3) Just after step 2), right-click the slot again, click Import > Import media now After step 3), the first media is imported and exported and then other media is imported.
Also, the first media is archived because of it being exported.
