Unable to reset the cleaning count against a cleaning tape within a library

Cause
For stand alone tape drives there is an ability to reset the cleaning count statistic within the Backup Exec console, in the property of the drive itself. Due to the automated nature of libraries this option does not apply to libraries and therefore is not available.
Within a library, Backup Exec needs to know which slot contains the cleaning tape as the cleaning count statistic is maintained against the specific tape (as in a multi-drive library the tape could be used in different drives) and to locate the cleaning tape either needs a scan or an inventory operation in order to identify the correct slot. As every insertion of a cleaning tape into a drive counts as a clean (which includes an inventory operation but not a scan), by design, Backup Exec will disable the inventory function against any slot that is identified as containing a cleaning tape. This ensures that inventory operations skip the cleaning tape to allow it to only be used when cleaning is required.
This means that the first cleaning tape inserted in a given slot can be inventoried once, but will not allow a second inventory and, immediately after teh inventory, will show a count of 1 against use. A scan operation against a slot containing a new cleaning tape, immediately after the scan, shows a 0 count against use and further scans are allowed because a scan operation ONLY reads the barcode and does not load the tape into the drive (or increase the count further)
Note: The tape libraries featured in the Backup Exec compatibility list should all support barcodes
Resolution
Use unique and correctly formatted barcodes on the cleaning tapes in a library and then a scan operation (either the automatic scan when importing media / inserting a magazine OR a manually started scan ) will reset the cleaning count for the tape when a new cleaning tape is used.
Note: Check with the hardware vendor to ensure the the correct format of cleaning tape barcode labels is used.
WORKAROUND for lack of Barcodes:Note: as Veritas expects Backup Exec installations with tape libraries to be using barcodes then the following steps are not guaranteed to work for all situations where barcodes are not available but have been seen to work in at least one configuration. If the steps fail to achieve a reset then barcodes will be needed.
- Change the cleaning tapes over in the library so that the new one is inserted in the same slot
- If not using an import slot to change the tapes then give chance (say 10minutes) for the library to initialize the magazine for changes
- In the BE Admin Console --> Storage section, expand Tape and Disk Cartridge Media --> All Media Sets, open up the Cleaning Media AND delete the old cleaning tape from the system
- Restart the BE Services
- At this point the slot containing the cleaning media should have switched to
- Right click the slot itself and the Inventory option is no longer greyed out and an inventory (without a catalog) should be run
- Once te inventory finishes, the statistics for the tape will now show the correct media label and the cleaning count will be 1
- A further attempt to run an inventory on the slot will now show that the inventory option is greyed out again.
WARNING : Because the cleaning count is ONLY kept inside the BEDB, re-inserting the original tape will no longer show the correct statistics as it will also be set to a 1 count. The used cleaning tape should be destroyed (OR at very least manually labelled with a record of its usage)
Issue/Introduction
The first cleaning tape used in a specific library slot does show how often it has been used, however after replacing the tape in the same slot with a new cleaning tape there appears to be no way to reset the cleaning statistics for the tape (and in fact the tape label will still report the name of the original tape.)
