Cause

Backup Exec does not control the order of the boot disks in the VMware virtual machine's BIOS. If the first disk in the order is not the system disk, the error message may appear.

Resolution

Before you power on the instantly recovered virtual machine, use the vSphere Management Assistant on the VMware host to modify the settings for the virtual machine.
  1. Select the option to Start the VM in the BIOS on first power-up.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine and select Settings.
  3. Click VM Options.
  4. In the left pane, click Boot Options, and then select Force BIOS setup (*).
  5. Check The next time the virtual machine boots, force entry into the BIOS setup screen check box.
  6. Connect to the virtual machine console and power on the virtual machine.
You will be in the BIOS Setup.
  1. Select Boot and move the system disk to the top of the “Hard Drive” list.

After exiting the BIOS, the instantly recovered virtual machine will boot successfully.
