Description
Error Message
The VMware Storage vMotion operation completes with success; however, the data is not moved.
Cause
VMware Storage vMotion requires that the target datastore be different from the source datastore to complete the migration. VMware Storage vMotion considers the datastore with the instant recovery snapshot to be the source datastore.
Resolution
Create a second datastore and use the datastore as the instant recovery job target or as the VMware Storage vMotion destination. Use one of the following methods to create a second datastore:
- Add local storage to the ESXi host.
- Add network storage with a NAS device.
- Create an NFS share on another server such as the Backup Exec server with the appropriate permissions and then mount it on the ESXi host.
Issue/Introduction
VMware Storage vMotion will not move disks unless the destination datastore is different from the source datastore. An Instantly recovered virtual machine uses both Backup Exec storage for the original source disk and ESXi datastore storage for the instant recovery virtual machine write snapshot. VMware Storage vMotion will not move the original source disks from Backup Exec storage unless the destination is different from the datastore that contains the instant recovery virtual machine snapshot. In order to move the original source disk, a second datastore is required in addition to the datastore that contains the instant recovery virtual machine snapshot.
