Resolution

Try one of the following solutions to resolve this issue:

[ I ] Change the network settings for specific jobs that target a RMAL storage device.

By doing this, other backup jobs that may not be targetted to RMAL storage device are not impacted. While creating the backup job, make the selections, change the protocol to IPv4 in the Protocol list box, in Network Options under Network on the Backup Options page.

In addition, Veritas recommends that for future backup jobs that are targetted to the RMAL device, one should consider changing the default network communication protocol to IPv4 on the Backup Exec server that processes the Linux Agent backup job. Doing so ensures that this issue does not occur again.
Use the following steps to change the default network communication protocol to IPv4 on the Backup Exec server that processes the Linux Agent backup jobs:
  1.  Start Backup Exec.

  2.   Click the Backup Exec button, and then select Configuration and Settings.

  3.   Select Backup Exec Settings, and then click Network and Security.

  4.   Under Network, in the Protocol list box, select IPv4 and then click OK.

[ II ] Disable the IPv6 protocol on the Linux server.

Additional information:
  • If IPv6 remains enabled, only existing backup sets can be restored.
  • If RMAL media becomes non-appendable, it cannot be used for new backup jobs. If this is the case with RMAL media, then the media must be moved to the Scratch Media set under All Media Sets before it can be used for a new backup job.

Issue/Introduction

When a Linux Agent backup job to Remote Media Agent for Linux (RMAL) storage device is sent from a Backup Exec server that has IPv6 network settings enabled, the following communication error appears. As a result, the backup job fails and the storage media that was targeted for the backup job becomes non-appendable
