SQL resources are only enumerated via NetBIOS. Therefore:
- SQL resources are only visible under the SQL resource group's virtual node name
- NetBIOS must be enabled
If clustered SQL resources are not being displayed, perform the following:
I. Check all of the virtual names of the cluster
All clusters have multiple names, and SQL resources will only be visible if the selection is for the virtual name of the SQL resource group. Try connecting to each of the virtual names and note the resources enumerated will change to reflect the resources in that group.
II. Clusters have at least two NetBIOS settings that should be checked
1. Ensure the actual NIC settings on the SQL server have NetBIOS enabled by:
a) Press the Start button
b) Go to the Control Panel
c) Choose Network connections
d) Select the appropriate public NIC
e) Right click and choose Properties
f) Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
g) Go to Properties
h) Select Advanced
i) Select WINS
j) Go to NetBIOS settings
k) Choose "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
l) Select OK three times to close the window
2. a) Launch the Cluster Administrator
b) Navigate to the SQL resource group
c) Click each IP address resource
c) View the Properties of each
d) "Enable NetBIOS for this address" must be turned on for each resource
Be aware that when performing this operation in a live production environment, that if the new settings cannot be enabled online, it may cause a resource group to failover repeatedly before failing completely and finally remaining offline.
Note: Check that advertising is configured correctly on the remote agent installed on each node since this will reduce complications that may arise.
