Description
Error Message
The exception in job log is only logged during LOG BACKUP part of the SQL Virtual Machine backup job as shown in the job log screenshot below:
Client side deduplication happens for SQL Virtual Machine backup including SQL resources as displayed in the screenshot below:
Resolution
The exception logged against LOG BACKUP for SQL resources can be ignored as this is by design and means that LOG BACKUP attempted at the end with SQL Virtual Machine could not be done with client side deduplication .
If ‘Run a SQL Log backup after backing up the Virtual Machine’ option in the backup job is unchecked, SQL log backup will not run after the virtual machine backup and the exception will not show up in the job log.
Issue/Introduction
Backup of virtual machines having SQL databases completes with the exception ‘Client-side deduplication is enabled for this job, but it could not be used’ when ‘Run a SQL Log backup after backing up Virtual machine’ option is enabled and the backup is targeted to a deduplication storage folder. This issue is seen with both Hyper-V and VMware virtual machines running SQL.
