Note: SQL Express Backup Exec Instance can be installed on a local or remote server. Screenshots provided below are from Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Express which gets shipped with Backup Exec 22.
1. Double click SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe from the installation media (default path mentioned). Refer Figure 1.

2. Click "
New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation" on SQL Server Installation Center screen. Refer Figure 2.

3. Select " I accept the license terms." and click Next. Refer Figure 3:

4. Confirm all tests for SQL have passed under " Global Rules" and click Next. Refer Figure 4:

5. Click
Next under "
Install Rules" screen after confirming all tests show a status of passed. Refer Figure 5.

6.Select the options to install the SQL database and click
Next on the "
Feature Selection" screen if installing in the default location. If not, change the path as per disk space availability. Refer Figure 6.

7. On the "
Instance Configuration" screen select
Named Instance and type the Backup Exec Instance Name - in this example we are using
BECUSTOM as it is recommended not to use BKUPEXEC - and click
Next. Refer Figure 7.

8. Set Account Name for SQL Server Database Engine to "
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" and click
Next on the "
Server Configuration" screen. Refer Figure 8.

9. Select
Windows Authentication Mode under "
Database Engine Configuration" screen and specify the Administrator account which has access to the database as shown in the figure and click
Next. Refer Figure 9.
Note: It is recommended to specify "
Administrators" as an administrator account for future username change. "Administrators" is automatically displayed as "
BUILTIN\Administrators (Administrators)".
If it is a domain controller, specify "
Domain Admins" and "
SYSTEM" though Microsoft does not recommend to install SQL server on a domain controller.

10. Monitor the
Installation Progress to confirm Database is successfully installed and click
Close at "
Complete" screen. Refer Figure 10.

11.To confirm that the Backup Exec SQL Instance is up and running, please right-click on Start > Run > Services.msc and check the
SQL Server (BECUSTOM) service is
Started (eg
Running) and set to Automatic Startup mode. Refer Figure 11.

12. The Backup Exec SQL Instance is installed successfully.
