Error Message

Backup Exec reports the following alert (Figure 1) when attempting to perform a backup operation on a BLANK or a NEW WORM (Write Once , Read Many) media :(Figure 1)
V-275-636
Use the import command to insert new WORM media into the robotic library

Figure 1:

Cause

The above alert appears when an overwrite or append operation is attempted on a WORM media that has already been manually associated with user created Media Set.

When new WORM media is introduced into Backup Exec, it is placed in the Scratch Media set. After the WORM media has been written to one time, you cannot move it to the Scratch media set. You can move WORM media to the Retired Media set to delete it from Backup Exec, but you cannot erase it or reformat it.

When WORM media is used in a media set, the overwrite protection period is not applied to it, but the append period is applied. A new WORM media is WORM media that has never been written to.

Solution

Perform the following steps to resolve this issue:

Move the NEW WORM media to the Retired Media set to delete it from Backup Exec and re-inventory the WORM Media. ( Steps I,II and III)

I. Delete NEW or BLANK WORM Media:

1. Go to Storage tab and expand Tape and Disk Cartridge Media.

2. Expand All Tape Media or a backup set under All Media Sets

3. Right click the media and click Retire  and then click Yes.

4. Right click the media again and click Delete  and then click Yes.

II. Re-inventory the WORM Media :

1. Go to Storage tab.

2. Select Stand-alone Drives, or if the device resides in a robotic library, select Robotic Libraries.

3. If you want to inventory some slots, select the slots containing the media you want to inventory.

4. Click Inventory > Inventory now in the ribbon on the top of window.

5. Verify that NEW WORM Tape appears in the Scratch Media Set

Note: Do not associate the NEW WORM with any other Media Set. This as when the new WORM media is introduced into Backup Exec, it is placed in the Scratch Media set.

III. Backup Settings:

1. Select the option "Use Write once, read many (WORM) media" under Backup Options | Storage. (Figure 2)

Figure 2:

2. If the WORM media is blank or still appendable, perform an append operation to it. Select the option "Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available" or "Append to media, terminate job if no appendable media is available" under Backup Options | Storage.

3. If the WORM media is not appendable, insert a new WORM media for the backup operation to continue.
