Description

Error Message

Unable to validate the NDMP server at this time. Do you still want to add it?

Cause

Attempt to add an EMC Data Mover server in Backup Exec console returns the above mentioned message if authentication for the user "NDMP" is not set to MD5 on the EMC Data Mover.

Backup Exec SGMon Debug  when configured to place Device and Media in verbose logging shows error below when EMC filer is being added under NDMP Server

PVLSVR: DeviceloScsi::Provider::TestNdmpServerConnection:
DERROR_PERMISSSION_DENIED(0x7000002e) <-
PVLSVR: AdammSession::Execute(ADAMM_SESSION_EXECUTE_NDMP_VALIDATE_HOST)
ERROR = 0x00000005 (ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED)

NDMP debug log from the filer shows the message "md5 password cannot be calculated" as shown in Figure 1.

Resolution

NDMP configuration for backups requires setting a username and password for each NDMP-host Data Mover (Data Mover is an equivalent to Netapp Filers) . The username recommended for for EMC NDMP  Server is "ndmp".

To resolve the issue,set authentication to MD5 for the account "NDMP" on the EMC Data Mover.
