Cause

  • If the following registry key is not at the default setting of 1,          
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Tape Format\Use Fast File Restore 
  • The above registry key could have been set to 0 (zero) to trouble-shoot certain restore and catalog issues.

Resolution

To bring the above registry key back to the default setting of 1, Follow the steps below:

 Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

1. Stop all Backup Exec (TM) services
  
2. Open REGEDT32
  
3. Edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Tape Format\Use Fast File Restore to provide a value of 1 (Figure 2)
  
4. Start all Backup Exec services again.
