Resolution

To avoid this issue, do one of the following:

•    Install the Backup Exec Agent for Windows, which removes the VMware VSS  provider and installs the Backup Exec VSS provider.
•    Uncheck the option “Back up using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot provider” on the Virtual Machines page in Backup Options for the backup job.

Issue/Introduction

During a backup of a fault tolerant VMware virtual machine, the virtual machine goes into an unprotected state during the snapshot process and stays in the unprotected state for the duration of the backup job. When the backup finishes, Backup Exec removes the snapshot, which enables the virtual machine to be returned to a protected state.
