User belonging to Backup Operators group (non-administrator) cannot launch Backup Exec Administration Console

Error Message

Following error messages are displayed while launching console:

  • "Could not connect - Could not connect to server SERVERNAME. Check that the server name and login credentials were entered correctly and that Backup Exec services are running on the server. Unable to connect to the service."

Or

  • "Unable to connect to the service - The supplied credentials must be an administrator or backup operator."

Cause

This phenomenon is caused by User Account Control (UAC) in Windows.

Workaround

One of the following workaround can be used.

1. Turn User Account Control (UAC) off
Refer to the following Microsoft KB to know how to turn UAC off.

2. Launch Backup Exec Administration Console by "Run as administrator" if the administrator password can be used.
