Description

Error Message

Final error: 0xe00003bf - Cannot open one or more mail messages because of unknown Exchange Web Service errors. Review the job log for more information.

Debug logging the Backup Exec Remote agent to capture EWS requests during a restore attempt returns:

Could not use...... webserviceurl
https:///ews/exchange.asmx The request failed.
The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

Cause

This condition is currently believed to be caused by a security restriction inside the Exchange (or the EWS, IIS components of Exchange) and may be related to Kerberos restrictions or other environmental or domain policy limitations.

Resolution

As the condition is caused by an environmental restriction, affected customers will need to contact Microsoft for identification of why the a denial (unauthorised) response is being returned during the restore. Microsoft should be able to assist with logging the EWS requests at the time of the restore to capture errors within IIS or Exchange itself to identify the cause. Note: prior to customer contacting Microsoft,  it should be confirmed that a PST restore works (see workaround below), that a login with the correct Exchange permissions is used for the restore and that the EWS debugs logs do capture the same 401 unauthorised message. It is possible a customer may therefore need to contact Backup Exec support for assistance prior to contacting Microsoft.

WORKAROUND:

Attempt to redirect the restore to PST (via a computer running both the Backup Exec Remote Agent and a supported version of Outlook)

Issue/Introduction

After a successful Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) backup of an Exchange Server an attempt to restore an individual e-mail fails reporting the error provided below. Note: The initial case was reported against virtual machine backups of Exchange , where the customer apparently could perform traditional RAWS agent backup and GRT restore of Exchange data, however it is possible that in some environments traditional RAWS agent backups will also be affected.
