Description

Error Message

Following Exception in backup job log:

V-79-57344-38769 - Virtual machine 'VM Name' was backed up using an offline backup, therefore the VHD / VHDX files are only crash consistent. File-level recovery can be performed, but results may be unpredictable. Application-level recovery cannot be performed for this virtual machine.

If Application GRT is enabled then following exception is also logged in the job log:

V-79-57344-38732 - Virtual machine 'VM Name' does not meet the requirements necessary for Backup Exec to restore individual application items. You cannot perform GRT-enabled restores of application data from this backup.

Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin event log does not report any error.

If you check the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer.xml file under \Backup Exec\RAWS\Logs folder on the Hyper-V server then you will see following entry for the problem virtual machine:

caption="Offline\VM Name"

Resolution

1. Restart "Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor" service inside the virtual machine. Run the backup and it should work fine.

Whenever the virtual machine (VM) is restarted, wait for few minutes after the VM is up and then restart the  "Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor" service inside the virtual machine.

2. Same behavior can be seen with Windows 10 virtual machine running on Hyper-v host on Windows 2012 or earlier version. This is normal and expected behavior as per Microsoft. Microsoft acknowledges this behavior as consistent as per their support matrix and expected for this type of setup.
As a workaround, you can upgrade your older Hyper-V Host Windows servers to Windows 2012 R2.

This behavior is consistent for all future Backup Exec versions.
