Description

Error Message

Code 19: Windows cannot start the hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.

Code 32: A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing this functionality.

Cause

If you run Backup Exec with tape or library hardware, and you uninstall Backup Exec and don't restart Windows before you reinstall Backup Exec, then the installation of a Backup Exec filter driver may be corrupted. Backup Exec is then prevented from discovering the tape or library hardware.

A symptom of a corrupted driver installation is that a warning icon appears on the tape drives and medium changers (libraries) in the Windows Device Manager. The device status displays either the Code 19 error or the Code 32 error, as shown in image below

Resolution

Run repair of Backup Exec installation following the steps below.

  1. Open the Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs) control panel
  2. Right-click Backup Exec, and then click Change.
  3. On the Backup Exec Additional Options dialog box, click Repair and follow the prompts.
  4. After the repair is complete, restart Windows.
