Description

Error Message

In the Backup Exec user interface, the following error is reported:

Error: A device with this name already exists. Enter a unique name.

In the Backup Exec Management Command Line Interface, the following error is reported:

Unable to update the [device]. Physical Volume Library Database - the name specified already exists.

Cause

Backup Exec 2012 and later does not allow different storage devices types to have the same name. Errors may occur when attempting to update storage device properties other than the device name for a device that does not have a unique name. On the storage device's Properties pane, the Apply button is not available until the device name is changed to a unique name.

In versions of Backup Exec prior to Backup Exec 2012, different storage device types could have the same name.

Resolution

Change the storage device name so that it is unique.

To rename a storage device:

  1. On the Storage tab, double-click the storage device that needs to be renamed.
  2. In the storage device properties, in the Name field, type the new name.
  3. Click Apply.
