Restoring Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) data with a long path name appears to result in only a partial restore

Cause

This is a known issue. Windows limits the combination of path and file names to 260 characters. New Technology File System (NTFS) supports more than 260 characters, however. When you restore DFSR data, the path name of the restored directories may exceed 260 characters. If the path name exceeds 260 characters, the restored directories do not appear in Windows Explorer, making it seem like the restore job failed.

Resolution

You can circumvent the Windows character limitation by creating a user share. Identify a directory that is close to the 260 character limitation and create a user share for that directory. Map a drive letter to the user share. Then you can use Windows Explorer to navigate to the deeper directories and files by using the mapped drive.

Issue/Introduction

When you restore DFSR data, it appears that the restore job is only successful for part of the data. Some nested directories or directories with long path names are not restored.
