How to backup and restore SAP Databases with the Backup Exec Oracle Agent

The Oracle DB and SAP configuration files that are mentioned below must be backed up at the same time. Not backing up Oracle DB or SAP configuration files can cause the SAP data to be inconstant and the database cannot be restored in a proper state. Also, make sure that the Oracle DB and SAP DB are in consistent states before running a backup.
NOTE: See the Veritas Backup Exec Administrator’s Guide for more information about creating backup jobs.
To back up SAP for Oracle databases, complete the following steps.
NOTE: All the prerequisites required for an Oracle backup must be met. Refer to the Veritas Backup Exec Administrator’s Guide for more information.
1. Select the "Agent for Applications and Databases" during the Backup Exec installation on the Backup Exec server.
2. Install the Backup Exec Agent for Windows on the SAP database server.
NOTE: If Oracle is configured as a fail-safe cluster, the Agent for Windows (AWS) must be installed on both cluster nodes.
3. On the Backup and Restore tab, right-click the SAP database server.
4. On the Backup menu, select the backup option to use.
5. In the Name field, type a unique name for the backup definition.
6. Do any of the following, as necessary:

To test or edit the credentials that Backup Exec uses to access backup selections

In the Selections box, click Test/Edit Credentials.

To add a stage to the backup definition
|
In the Backup box, click Add Stage.

To modify the job settings
|
In the Backup box, click Edit.

7. In the Selections box, click Edit.
8. Browse the SAP database server and select the following SAP server configuration files:
• Oracle Profile

• SAP Profile

• SAP Data Organization

• SAP backup metadata

9. After completing configuring the backup definition, click OK on the Backup Properties dialog box.
When restoring Oracle DB and SAP files, restore the SAP NTFS files first. Veritas recommends that all SAP configurations files are restored to ensure consistency. When the SAP restore job completes successfully, restore the Oracle SAP database. Make sure to perform the restore jobs consecutively to avoid leaving the SAP database in an inconsistent mode.
When selecting the files to restore, make sure to select the SAP NTFS and Oracle DB files with the closest timestamps to each other.
To restore SAP for Oracle databases, complete the following steps.

1. Create a restore job for the following SAP server files, using the Files, folders, or volumes restore option:
• Oracle Profile
Usually located at
• SAP Profile
Usually located at
• SAP Data Organization

• SAP backup metadata

2. Restore the files to the original location and select the option Overwrite the file on disk only if it is older.
3. When the restore job is completed, create another restore job for the Oracle SAP database.
