V-79-57344-38909 - 0xE00009415 - An error was encountered while attempting to browse the contents of Microsoft SQL Server. Microsoft SQL Server does not appear to be running or network connections are preventing access to it.

Causes

1) The SQL instance being selected may not be compatible with the version of Backup Exec or Backup Exec Agent for Windows being used. Check SCL guides. 

2) IPV6 is enabled on one of the two machines attempting to connect. 

Beremote debug log from the Backup Exec or SQL server reveals the following:

[9140] Could not resolve the "bews-ndmp" or the "ndmp" service, error code: 10109, using port 10000
[9140] Could not create an IPv6 socket at this time, reason:An error occurred during a socket creation operation: Error Code: 10047, System Error Message: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.

 

Solutions

1) Consult the Backup Exec Software Compatibility List (SCL) to determine the correct version of Backup Exec/Agent to be used with the version of SQL being selected for backup.
 
2) Disable IPV6 on the single machine where enabled, restart the Backup Exec services and select the SQL resources in the backup selection list

OR

Confirm both servers are capable of using IPV6 and enable IPV6 on the second machine.
